Christian Ton Ton Salut s’est produit lors de Festivals mondialement connus comme, Marciac, Nice, Vienne, Paris, Uzeste, Berlin, Stuttgart, Madrid, Sevilla, Tunis, Fès, Bamako, Ouagadougou, Yaoundé, Madajazzcar, Almaty…

Parallèlement au Jazz, il est associé à de nombreux projets artistiques : DRUMPACT / LOOPING (Percussions Illimitées), 4 créations avec le THÉÂTRE RÉEL, « Le bruissement de la langue » (Musique & Littérature créé en 2003 avec son ami saxophoniste Richard CALLÉJA, d’après Roland BARTHES), LA DANSE avec la Cie James Carlès et avec le BAOBAB (musiques et danses traditionnelles du Cameroun).

Aujourd’hui, outre ses multiples activités de sideman freelance, Ton Ton SALUT joue avec THE HIP JAZZ TRIO – 1000 concerts depuis 1993 avec Abdu SALIM (sax) et Akim BOURNANE (bass) – ainsi qu’avec les SOUL JAZZ REBELS. Il dirige son JAZZ UNIT 5tet, tourne éventuellement avec Didier LABBÉ à Madagascar et en Afrique du Sud et alimente toujours le concept JAZZ FUTURES dans lequel on a vu entre autres Olivier Temime, Alex Tassel, Baptiste Trotignon, Clovis Nicolas, Laurent Fickelson, Vincent Artaud, Franck Avitabile, Jean Vernhères, Nicolas Gardel, Cyril Amourette et beaucoup d’autres…

Hello Folks,

My name is Christian Salut and my nickname is Ton Ton, so everybody knows me as Ton Ton SALUT…

I’m in my early 60’s and I’ve been a professional musician since the age of 16. I have tried a million things until the early 80’s when I really set my mind on jazz and the jazzman’s life.

Since then I’ve been playing with hundreds of musicians from all over the world, including Jazz stars Sonny Stitt, George Coleman, Sonny Simmons, Jerry Gonzalez, George Cables, Lou Bennett, Frank Lacy, Wynton Marsalis and many many others.

Mid 80’s I spent a few years in New York City, paying my dues to this music, jamming and touring with local musicians.

Every other year since 1988 and until today, I have been traveling to Africa and performing with the great djembe master Mare Sanogo alongside many singers from Mali and Cameroon as well as sharing the daily lives of African families…

During all these years I have carried out several ambitious projects in France. One of them was a collaboration with my oldest friend and saxophonist Richard Calleja called « Le Bruissement de la Langue » (based on the work of Roland Barthes) which blended literature with various forms of music. I have also composed an alternative soundtrack for Buster Keaton’s movie The Cameraman.

Today, besides my sideman projects, I play intensively and record with « The Soul Jazz Rebels » (2 studio recordings issued on the « Black Stamp » label), I enjoy playing in the fabulous « Hip Jazz Trio » with my friends Abdu Salim & Akim Bournane (≈1000 concerts since 1993) and I have recently launched a new band devoted to the music of Kenny Wheeler and Bill Evans: « Ton Ton Salut Jazz Unit 5tet ».

Every summer you can catch me playing and teaching at the Marciac Jazz Festival. I also teach classes of Jazz History and Rhythm Workshop at the National Conservatory of Toulouse and Drumming, Rhythmic Culture and Musical Counseling in various institutions like Music’Halle, Agostini Drum School or James Carlès Choreographic Center.

Of course I also have a private life. I’ve raised two daughters and I spend as much time as I can enjoying life by listening to a lot of music, reading, going to the cinema or traveling.

My Jazz discography includes over 50 albums, from Big Band to trio and two CDs under my own name.
